Chandrayaanโ€‘2

Orbiter, lander and rover architecture around the Moon.

Orbiter, Lander and Rover

Chandrayaanโ€‘2 was designed as a threeโ€‘part mission: an orbiter, a lander named Vikram, and a rover named Pragyan. The orbiter continues to function and send data, even though the 2019 landing attempt did not succeed.

  • ๐Ÿš€ Launch vehicle: GSLV Mk III (now LVM3)
  • ๐Ÿ“… Launch: 22 July 2019
  • ๐Ÿ›ฐ Mission: Orbiter + lander + rover
  • ๐Ÿ“ก Current status: Orbiter operational in lunar orbit.
Learning from Failure

The Vikram lander lost contact during final descent. ISRO later used this data to refine software, sensors and procedures for Chandrayaanโ€‘3.

Orbiter Science

The orbiter carries instruments to study the Moonโ€™s topography, exosphere, waterโ€‘ice distribution and elemental composition. With a planned multiโ€‘year life, it continues to support future missions.
