Adityaโ€‘L1

Indiaโ€™s first spaceโ€‘based solar observatory.

Watching the Sun from L1

Adityaโ€‘L1 is Indiaโ€™s first dedicated solar observatory. Placed around the Sunโ€“Earth L1 Lagrange point, it can continuously watch the Sun without Earth eclipses, helping scientists study solar flares, coronal mass ejections and spaceโ€‘weather effects.

  • ๐Ÿš€ Launch vehicle: PSLV
  • ๐Ÿ“… Launch: 2023
  • ๐Ÿ“ Orbit: Halo orbit around Sunโ€“Earth L1 point
  • ๐Ÿงช Mission: Solar atmosphere, solar wind and magnetic fields.
Why L1?

The L1 point offers a relatively stable vantage point with an uninterrupted view of the Sun, ideal for continuous monitoring of solar activity that affects satellites and power grids on Earth.

Instruments

Adityaโ€‘L1 carries coronagraphs, Xโ€‘ray and UV instruments, and particle detectors to probe different layers of the Sun and the solar wind.
