Searching for traces of life in the Martian environment.
ExoMars is a joint ESAโRoscosmos programme to explore Mars, focusing on the search for signs of past or present life. It includes an orbiter, lander technology demonstrations, and plans for a European-built rover.
The Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) studies methane and other trace gases in the Martian atmosphere, while future elements aim to drill below the surface where biosignatures are more likely to be preserved.
Agencies: ESA & Roscosmos
TGO Launch: 2016
Focus: Methane and trace gases, potential biosignatures
Status: TGO operational
